He was trying to open up to you and you blew it. He does like you and if you like him, why would you change the subject. Even a person who's shy would know if their approached like this first, to jump on the opportunity so, they don't have to be put on the spot later. Now if you want to change it, your going to have to tell him your ready to answer his question that you avoided.
