What to do w/ broken laptop and netbook w/my stuff sill on it?

I do not know what to do w/them because they still have my pics, and info and maybe sensitive data.....but they do not work anymore, and have just been sitting on the shelf collecting dust and taking up space. If I am worried about MY stuff being on them falling into the hands of a wrong person-, should I just take a sledge hammer to them and toss them- just to satisfy my own paranoia?
